Cultural theories of risk insist that the perception of sources of risk depends on the belief and value systems of each culture. According to this idea, this research uses the psychometric methodology to make three studies of risk perception and two comparisons between a Spanish sample and a Chilean one. The first study consists of obtaining the most important sources of risk as considered by the Chilean society from a sample of 105 subjects. In the second study, a comparison is made between the two risk maps obtained from 66 sources of risk in two samples, one Spanish and one Chilean, with the same number of participants (N=56). Finally, the differences in the assessment of 24 sources of risk made by a Spanish sample (N=100) and a Chilean sample (N=84) are analysed. In the three studies references are made to the importance of cultural aspects of the samples studied, and to the biases that are likely to produce differences between the two samples.
