Abstract

Ayacucho, decisive battle. This seems to be the main feature of a military deed, raised to the status of myth, in the process of splitting between the Spanish monarchy and its possessions in the New Continent. December 9, 1824 was a turning point, and everything after would be essentially different. The story of that day has given rise to numerous descriptions, more or less repetitive. Over time, despite the different interpretations, this battle keeps a privileged place in History and in the hearts of millions of Peruvians (and other Hispanic Americans). Ayacucho, in the boundaries of the Andean world, is a military event, which supports the construction of a «historical fact», which represents much more in time and space. Perhaps the time has come, in its bicentennial, to meditate on such event and think over the «liberating saga», with its lights and shadows and, above all, in the case of Peru. Ayacucho, end of an era and beginning of another, border and bridge between two shores of History, its significance lies in that double circumstance of end and beginning, exit and entry gate, which is reflected in the rupture and the continuity, the implementation of «the new» and the survival of «the traditional». A variable combination of utopia and reality. Therefore, we will re-read the conflict between the «realist» and «separatists» forces, at the culmination of the 1824 campaign. Thus, along with its historical-political significance, we will pay attention, with the limitations imposed by the possibilities of this article, to several key factors in the military domain, with the aim of reaching a better understanding of what it really happened. These aspects have received, in general, less attention in the historiography of Ayacucho. Therefore, we will make some remarks about logistics, strategy, tactics, information, propaganda, communications and resources available to both sides, both with regard to human and material means, as well as with regard to the circumstances of the context in which the events took place
