DOMINGO MARTÍNEZ

In 2004, I finished my BSc in Geology at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) with honors (1st National Award in the National Bachelors Degree Awards, UCM Bachelor Degree Award and UCM Extraordinary Award in Experimental Sciences). Between 2004 and 2008, I carried out my PhD (“Paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental inferences in critical periods by means of geochemical analyses of the geological continental record”) with European Doctor certificate and PhD Award. My research interests focus on the investigation of past environmental and climate variability by means of biogeochemical analyses on geological and paleontological archives. I specialized on stable isotope biogeochemistry of Mesozoic and Cenozoic vertebrates, invertebrates and organic matter enclosed in the sediment, although I have used a range of biogeochemical proxies such as trace elements, rare earth elements and biomarkers. Throughout my career, I have published 40 articles in high-ranked journals (e.g., PNAS, Scientific Reports). I am associate editor at Journal of Iberian Geology and the Journal of the Spanish Geological Society. I have participated in 50 conferences and 26 projects funded by national and international organisms (e.g., NSF, Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation). I have been principal investigator of 10 projects (e.g., Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, National Geographic Society). I have directed 8 contracts between the General Direction of Historical Heritage of the Madrid Government and the UCM to excavate and elaborate outreach activities at the Somosaguas fossil site (Madrid basin, Spain). I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California Santa Cruz (USA) for 3 years and I have been a visiting scholar at other international institutions from USA, UK, Argentina and Chile for a total of 1 year and 9 months. I have taught at BSc and MSc studies at the Schools of Geology, Biology and Education of the UCM. I have co-supervised one PhD thesis at the Plymouth University (United Kingdom) and I am currently co-supervising two PhD theses at the UCM (Spain). I have acted as evaluator of proposals submitted to the National Science Foundation (USA), Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions (European Comission) and National Geographic Society. In 2015, I received the UCM Young Award of Science and Technology, which recognised the outstanding scientific performance of early-stage researchers.
