Doctor by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the thesis Islamofobia, racismo e izquierda discursos y prácticas del activismo en España 2019. Supervised by Dr. Ángeles Ramírez, Dr. Laura Mijares Molina.

I also sign as Daniel Gil-Benumeya Flores. I have a PhD in Religious Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid and previously earned my bachelor's degree in Arab and Islamic Studies from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and my master's degree in Advanced Studies on Islam in Contemporary European Society from the UCM. Since 2016, I have worked as a professor in the Area of Arab and Islamic Studies, part of the Department of Linguistics and Oriental Studies at the UCM, where I teach various subjects in the degree in Semitic and Islamic Studies and the degree in Modern Languages and Literatures, as well as the Master's in Advanced Studies on Islam in Contemporary European Society and the Interuniversity Master's in European Intercultural Studies (shared by the UCM, the University of Clermont-Auvergne, and the University of Regensburg). My teaching usually focuses on subjects related to history, society, and thought. My research area is generally related to the study of the history and current situation of Muslim communities in Europe and Spain and specifically the discourses emitted from and/or about them in relation to processes of forming collective identity, political agency, and mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion. My specific research lines are Islamophobia and racism, as well as issues related to identity and representations involving Islam, Muslim populations, and relationships between the Islamic world and Europe. I am also interested in the political use of history and memory, and in this aspect, I usually use the relationship of Madrid with its historical Islamic legacy as a case study. Since 2022, I am the coordinator of the Master's in Contemporary Studies on the Arab World and Muslim Communities: Social Mediation and Conflict Management. I am a member of the Analysis Group on Islam in Europe (GRAIS) and the University Institute of Religious Sciences (IUCR). In the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years, I am coordinating the teaching innovation project IslaMad: "The Arab-Islamic cultural heritage in Madrid as a tool for knowledge and reflection on history and the uses of memory, citizen management of heritage and promotion of diversity and inclusion".
