Abstract

The so-called "knowledge workers" constitute the fastest growing segment within the workforce in advanced societies, and one of the key leverages when competing in the global economy. Therefore, the management of these workers is a strategic challenge for organizations, and understanding their different characteristics, a necessary first step to succeed in the policies and tools to implement. Technical and scientific personnel employed in research and development, both in the public and private industry, is a professional group with own identity, statistically representative and whose management and organization represents specific challenges. The search for theoretical references and applied research shows the evidence of the scarce scientific production on the subject in Spain. The objective of this research has been to study whether or not the personnel employed in R & D in Spain have the differential features found by the literature in other countries. The research is based on a perspective that goes beyond the usual approach used to date, focused exclusively on the analysis "Macro" and institutional, providing the vision of the researchers about their own interests and perceptions as workers. The study has been carried out on the research staff of the Health Research Institutes of Madrid.
