Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease affecting aproximately 1% of European and Western populations. Although its aetiology remains elusive, it is known that genetic and environmental factors trigger disease development and severity. Our work contributes to unveil the genetic basis of RA in the Spanish population by assessing novel genetic risk factors and validating others. In addition, we show based on the evidence of our research that some genetic factors contribute specifically to RA development in certain RA subgroups of patients, supporting the idea that a comprehensive RA classification should be sought.
