Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most common arthritic problems in the elderly. Although the pathomechanics of knee osteoarthritis is not completely understood, it is accepted that excessive localized loading in the knee during walking is an important factor in the initiation and progression of the arthritic process. Frontal plane knee joint moments have been used as an indirect measure of knee joint loading and have also been linked to the presence of knee osteoarthritis of the medial compartment and to the degree of osteoarthritis in several studies. The aim of the present study is to explore mechanical factors related to the frontal plane knee joint moments during gait.
