Resumo

The most recent studies in neuroscience emphasize the role of attention in the pathophysiology of some mental disorders. For this reason, researchers try to find therapeutic modalities that can functionally influence the neural substrates of attention. Hypnosis may therefore constitute a potential therapeutic tool, since it is a form of attentive-receptive concentration that, properly taught, can help the subject modify the functional activation pattern of the brain areas involved in attentional processes. Thus, suggestion could enable people to modify deeply entrenched behaviours. Hypnotic susceptibility (suggestibility) can be measured using standardized scales with excellent psychometric properties and, according to the studies carried out in the field, is a trait that correlates with higher cognitive flexibility and a better response to therapies involving an interpersonal relationship.
