ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: According to ILO estimates, about 160 million new cases of occupational diseases occur annually and more than 2 million deaths are due to work-related diseases. In Spain, estimates suggest that 2 out of 3 occupational diseases are treated in public health centers and hospitals rather than by a mutual or authorized entity. The present work aims to estimate the diseases of possible occupational disease origin attended in the SERMAS through the Primary Health Care. METHODOLOGY: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The research is carried out on working population between 16-65 years old, who attend the Primary Care centers of SERMAS and had an occupational disability in the period of one year. The relation of the available sociodemographic variables and the variables of disability duration, type of pathology and date of disability were analyzed. RESULTS: The research on the studied population showed of the processes of occupational disability, 61.9% correspond to women and 38.1 % belongs to men. Statistical significance (p < 0.05) was established between certain age groups, sex, duration of discharge, pathologies studied and date of incapacitation process. CONCLUSIONS: 1-Through the estimates calculated by other authors, we obtain that 6580 (5%) of the processes of occupational disability attended in Primary Care could have a work origin. 2-The highest prevalence of the processes of temporary disability are due to musculoskeletal disorders. 3-There is a significant relationship between the processes of temporary incapacity due to pathologies and the sociodemographic variables, sex and age. 4-It is fundamental to consider the labor history of the patients. 5- The study shows the need for a good coordination system between all entities involved for adequate notification of occupational diseases.
