Abstract

"Citizen insecurity" is at the heart of the contemporary debate on public safety in our societies. An "urban problem" on which there is a huge consensus when it comes to "fighting" against it, that is, there are specific institutions that "take care" of it. A social problem that has been implemented in the last decades a series of measures ranging from the installation of security cameras on the streets to the passage of a controversial Citizen Security Law, passing through an increasing Police presence in the "public space". A security device that, from the citizen insecurity as a "problem", has gradually been legitimized in the city.In the face of such a "problem", we must ask ourselves, where does it come from? Has it always been formulated in the same way throughout history? What is the relation of this “problem” with the urban space, that is, with the urban social structure? How do discourses about insecurity work in different social groups? Is the same insecurity experienced by a young person as an elder, a woman than a man, a rich person than a poor person? Why is insecurity "managed" from the "neighborhoods"? In what direction does insecurity operate when it comes to producing society? Finally, what is the relationship between citizen insecurity and social inequality? These are some of the questions that, throughout this thesis, we have tried to answer...
