Résumé

The problems of the patient with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) of themuscular type are heterogeneous in nature and multifactorial etiology.Its therapeutic approach is not always simple and forces the clinician to seekmeasures that relax the muscles and relieve pain.Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stress (TENS) is the most commonly usedelectrical stimulation technique as an alternative to traditional analgesic treatments,such as pharmacological or surgical treatments. Its popularity is based on, amongother things, that it is an inexpensive, non-invasive, easy-to-administer technique thathas few side effects and interactions with other drugs, besides being a techniquesusceptible of being used for home treatment after a period of training of the patienthimself.The mechanism of action of TENS has been explained by two theories: The GateControl Theory of Mezack and Wall (1965) and The Endogenous Opioid ReleaseTheory by Sjolund and Eriksson (1979)...
