Abstract

The frequency of use of systemic antifungal agents has increased significantly in most tertiary care centers. The inappropriate use of antifungals in recent years has played an important role in the epidemiological changes on fungal etiology, leading to an increase in fungal resistance and emergent fungi. Moreover, this antifungal overuse increases the potential for drug related toxicity and implies an “extra” cost for the health system. Antifungal stewardship programs are multidisciplinary interventions lead by infectious disease specialists, clinical microbiologists and pharmaceutics networking with other specialists from the main prescribing departments, with the common objective of optimize the management of fungal infections and antifungal use.
