Abstract

Color is a visual experience, a sensory impression that we receive through the eyes, independent of the coloring matter of the same. It is one of the sensory perceptions that usually awakens - consciously and unconsciously - reactions (emotional and expressive) in the human being. There is a variety of colors and each type of color has a symbology and numerous meanings that we use to communicate. Despite the multitude of studies already carried out, the history of colors remains, however, a relatively new field of research if it refers to the progress made in the field of contrastive linguistics. The knowledge of the symbols associated with colors is relevant for contrastive linguistics since colors have different connotations for each culture, which have been modified throughout history. These symbolic connotations are reflected in the language precisely in groups of words such as idiomatic expressions. As a consequence, these combinations of words are difficult to translate, since their meaning is not necessarily deduced from the meaning of their components separately...
