Résumé

Libraries, from the very beginning, have contributed considerably to educating and preparing human beings to live in society. That social commitment has been developed in several ways throughout History, but the specific cultural elements of the society have never been lacking either. One reads a book to be free; one admires a painting to enrich ones spirit: one attends a play to understand what the author wishes to contribute to the Art; one goes to the opera, to the ballet or listens to a story told passionately by a story-teller All of these activities, which the human being considers entertainment, personal enrichment or simply a way to forget about professional responsibilities, are considered today as part of the cultural industry. And libraries are involved in all of these activities in different ways. An interesting model for cultural activities is proposed by the Juan March Foundation Library, as a reference for other libraries, that carry out similar activities which contribute to making the cultural industry even more valuable to library users.
