Zusammenfassung

Non-finite clauses with gerunds admitted diverse preverbal elements in Old Spanish, whereas Modern Spanish only accept preverbal Subjects. Therefore, it is worth to explore which kind of semantic and syntactic role these preverbal elements played in the Medieval language, especially the adverbs. This study demonstrates the relationship of such elements with a defective left periphery, a structure that was not always displayed. Besides, this peripheral structure depended on the degree of independence of the gerund clause regarding the verb of the main clause, and on the presence of a preposition.
