Abstract

The subject of this communication is the analysis of gender roles in the TV series Lost, from J.J. Abrams, where the main characters adopt new attitudes, compared with previous fiction series: women are empowered and exhibit many traditional masculine traits, whereas men are sensitive, and show feminine characteristics. In order to identify and measure which are these traditional features in men and women, we have studied the theories in the subject and the bibliography specialized in psychology of the representation of gender roles in Television. We have issued then an inventory of these traits and applied it to Chapters 1 to 20 of Season 1. The study concludes that characters with strong traditional, sexualized identity show difficulties to adapt to the new background of the island, while those who tend to have more features of both sexes, who are more androgynous, have a better evolution and adaptation.
