Abstract

«A look to the heavens: sotto in sù and quadratura».«Quadratura» painting, that is, painting which incorporates feigned architecture that seems to continue the real architecture, has always required real specialists who in many cases assisted more renowned artists. This article studies the evolution of this painting, in particular the so-called «Sotto in sù» (seen from below), through its artists, analysing the way it is carried out from a geometric point of view. Another point of discussion is the doubts arising in the principles of perspective when dealing with this type of paintings, where the projection plane is horizontal, referring to the different theories developed by the most important scholars at the time. In each fresco we shall discuss the way in which the artist makes use of the procedures outlined, and their link with the space in which they are developed, to order the existing typology. We shall also follow the guiding thread which links some artists with others in this specific art form, originating as it does from Italy, moving beyond borders and spreading throughout central Europe and England, often by means of the painted work and written word of geometry experts.
