Résumé

An experiment was conducted on the changes in beliefs presenting two distinct versions of the British feature film "Laberinto de Mentiras" (Separate Lies) to two groups. The polarity between the two distinct endings (Satisfactory vs. Unsatisfactory) gave rise to differences in meaning and intensity of the changes in beliefs. Identification factors as well as empathy acted as the mediating variables in the change of beliefs towards the protagonist in both versions, in addition to cognitive processing in the unsatisfactory version. These results offered new evidence contrary to the current generalized thought that considers the cognitive process as irrelevant in persuasive narrative.
