Resumo

The study presented here is part of the Research Project for the Promotion of Gender Equality in the Scientific Information (IFIGIC), funded by the Women’s Institute, the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality. It aims to analyze the image of the woman scientist in Spanish society, and specifically, in this proposal, the scientific visibility through the media women, and how it affects the different images and social representations that women and men have towards this group for this research was part of two of the elements identified in different models of communication: the sender and receiver, journalist and citizen. The objective is to analyze and compare their views to see the results of the process. As secondary objectives, determine whether the message reaches the desired efficiency and where it is not and why, to analyze these elements. To do this, we used two qualitative techniques, in-depth interviews on science journalists, and three focus groups; an exclusively made up of women, men and another consisting of a mixed third, made up of women and men. The results may not be illuminating. The views expressed by journalists does not match the groups on matters of great importance. For one thing journalists do not recognize the issue of gender as a relevant issue. On the other hand, the social knowledge about people engaged in scientific research in our country is very low and insignificant.
