Abstract

The goal of the present work is to assess the behaviour of three commercial products, two trademarks (Maimeri: mastic and ketonic resins; Winsor & Newton: gum arabic), used for the chromatic reintegration of lacunae or losses of painting in cultural property, by way of subjecting them to cycles of accelerated ageing and to the corresponding colorimetric measurement following the CIELAB evaluation system of 1976. The data obtained after the study of the test tubes show the main changes in colour, in luminosity and the tendency to yellowing of the various colours in the brands under study. The restorator’s knowledge of the behaviour through time of these products is an extraordinarily important factor in view of the conservation of the whole historical-artistic heritage values, and should constitute a praxis that is not yet fully consolidated.
