Abstract

The historical literature, from B.C to the beginning of the XIX century, describes the handmade production of the pigment known as verdigris. The most usual recipe for making it uses copper and vinegar. This handmade process is not laborious, even though, the necessary time for making it is very long (15 days). In the XIX century started its industrial production, changing the components for its synthesis (neutralized vinegar and copper sulphate) and reducing the time for its production. These differences may cause a different composition in the resulting verdigris with respect to the handmade verdigris. On the other hand, it is also possible the presence of additives used to reduce the cost. These differences produce importance changes in its chromatic progress with the UV ageing.
