Abstract
Greek particles are complex elements in the Grammar of Ancient Greek. They are neither easy to define, nor easy to translate. Old translations made them equivalent to heavy phrasal components, but recently they are not to be perceived in modern translations to Spanish. The reason of that seems to be intuitive. Our purpose is to show an appropriate theoretical base for such practice. Particles in written texts are in correlation with the structural function of intonative contours in oral texts. They are required by specific conditions of graphematics in written texts. They are also required by conditions of gender. In modern texts, like translations, their correlate for both functions are punctuation marks in a wide sense.
