Abstract

Spanish science had developed to a certain degree from the end of XIX century to the first third of the XX century. “The Institución Libre de Enseñanza” and “The Junta para la Ampliación de Estudios” triggered the so-called "age of silver" of Spanish science, during which contact was made with the trends of thought in the rest of the continent. However, the civil war put an end to this context: many professors and lecturers were purged, others were exiled or even executed, being this the cause of a deep impoverishment of universities' human capital. Both the legitimate and the rebel factions hurried up to get rid of enemies within the university, establishing faculties made up of loyal scholars, even if in many cases, they were not the best.
