Abstract

This paper shows the fi rst results of a research project focused on the evolution of the human settlement and its relationship with the environment and the landscape in a region of the mountains of León, which is exactly situated in the Esla-Alto Cea watershed. Another aim is to analyse the connection and relationship between diff erent territories, connected by natural crossing areas, across a medium-high mountain territory. This area has a wide physiographic variety, that allows the existence of diff erent ecosystems and habitats which are highly suitable for the human settlement along the diff erent stages of the Prehistory. This fact is supported by the presence of archaeological sites ranging from Lower Palaeolithic to Iron Age, including diff erent periods which mark the transition from hunter-gatherer societies to metallurgic societies.
