Resum
The philological analysis of the census of Santiago del Estero (1608) provides us with a complex overview of what the American linguistic reality must have been at the beginning of the 17th century in northeast Argentina, apart from supplying us with invaluable clues in order to understand the later evolution of the American varieties of Spanish. This analysis is mainly focused on the distribution of seseo and the distinction of speakers of different dialects of Spanish in situations of linguistic contact.
