Abstract

The authors begin by providing the theoretical and temporal setting for the work of Royce and Powell, giving an in depth analysis of its implications. They consider the multivariate statistical analysis (particularly the factor one) used by the differential psychology over the last years as suitable to the task of inductively breaking down contents and data taken from reality. They suggest that Royce and Powell, using the contributions of the Information Theory and the General Systems Theory, incarnate the essence of the new approach. Among other issues they point out that the Systematic Multifactor Theory contains the concept of type, emphasizes both cognitive and affective derivations and makes possible a comprehensive evaluation of individuals depending on the subsystems profiles. Nevertheless, they find arguable to turn to a hierarchical model in order to build up the supra-system (the personality) and each sub-system. The authors consider that, through structures like the one of Royce and Powell, Differential Psychology shows that ecological validity has never been separated from its goals and assumptions. Finally, the authors stress the agreement between their discipline and the new psychology paradigms; being faithful to its methods and tools, but open to theoretical and empirical challenges.
