Abstract

The discussion on the use of qualitative versus quantitative methods and paradigms affects the general psychology program and has existed since the origins of Psychology as a science. This article presents a debate and questions the traditional approach of joining defined and closed groups of theoretical prescriptions to one or another type of methods, presenting them as incompatible alternatives. This view is rejected and replaced by one that: 1) clearly recognizes the scientific character of the qualitative perspective; 2) performs a first approach to a joint use of both perspectives; 3) clearly distinguishes two different levels: paradigmatic/epistemological and methodological/technical.
