Résumé
This study is based on information on saving provided by Consumer's Economic SentimentSurvey. Quarterly opinion polls carried out since 1977 have permited a longitudinal analysis of the number of savers and of their forecasts during the 90s. The results indicate that a large majority of Spaniards have a favourable attitude towards saving, but only one in three actually manage to do it. Over half the population spend the whole of their income. In order to study the different population groups in greater depth, the authors made a segmentation analysis of the number of savers, de-savers and saving expectations. The finalgroup of this segmentation are formed by using the variables that have proved to be the most important for explaining saving and de-saving: income, age, occupation and number of members of the household. Although family income is the crux of the matter, the other threevariables mentioned appear at a secondary level of explanation.
