This article examines the varying degree of involvement of venture capital operators in the financing of innovationin Europe and Spain in comparison with the American experience, pinpointing the possible underlying reasonsfor this. These include the unsuitability of certain market conditions, which calls for the selective use of incentives fomented by the public sector. For these purposes we consider the different possible mechanismsof action while at the same time putting forward a model of simulation, supplied with a real sample of holdings in Spanish companies as a means for studying the cost effectiveness of each one of them.
