Abstract

On the basis of an empirical presentation of the contribution of families to the Spanish welfare system, the authors develop a more general discussion along two lines. On the one hand, they propose to widen the focus of attention in the analysis of social welfare, to include welfare agents other than the state (families, firms and non-profit associations) and welfare functions other than the funding and provision of services (affectionate caring, transaction, regulation and moralization). On the other, they contend that European welfare systems and states are undergoing a process of hibridization, in their adaptation to an increasingly interdependent and homogeneous international environment.
