Resumen

The shally-silty rocks which crop out in the Guadiato Area (Córdoba Province, SW Spain) have been usually studied in the area of the Fresnedoso Stream Section. Some authors regarded this section as stratigraphical and sedimentological reference for the interpretation of the Mississippian from Sierra Morena. We restudy the biostratigraphy of this section with foraminifera, obtaining a late Viséan age (zone 14). Some sedimentary studies have been also carried out, and previous interpretations have been revised. A deep study of outcrops of the Fresnedoso Unit in the Guadiato Area showed that the Fresnedoso Section is one of great interest, but it does not represent the most typical rocks in Fresnedoso Unit. Some other sections have been studied close to the villages of Villanueva del Rey and Espiel (Fig. 1). Turbiditic sequences are the main feature of these sections, contrarily to the tempestites which are dominant at the Arroyo Fresnedoso Section. This section may be typical for the shallow environments, but some other sections such as Camino del çguila 3, mostly composed of turbidites, are more representative for the Fresnedoso Unit.
