Abstract

Francisco Pi y Margall's ñame (1827-1901) has been tied to the early times of Federalism, Socialism, and even Anarchism in Spain. Opponents of the Restoration Régime glorified his qualities, turning him into a sort of lay saint. Compared to corrupt and oli-garchical Spain, Pi became the symbol of a regeneraron based on right ethical and moral principies, both prívate and public. Ne-vertheless, Pi's federal project, as well as his 1873 Government and his overall political performance were complete failures. This article tries to approach Pi y Margall's prívate and public lives, to figure out why he was turned into a lay saint, and to analyze the nature of his ideas and political behaviour.
