Abstract

During the first two years of the Second Republic, a growing breach developed between economic interest groups and the various Republican governments, although the fact that this reached a situation of unanimity was by no means a foregone conclusion. For different reasons and depending on their respective situations, owners, managers and employers -both large and small- came to the same conclusion regarding economic and especially employment policy, and were the main originators of a crisis which bore a resemblance to the international economic situation, but in appearance alone. Increased costs, doubts over certain reforms, the arbitrary nature of many decisions, contradictions between policies of different ministries, labour disputes and the inability of governments to maintain law and order, were -according to these interest groups- the cause of the progressive loss of confidence, which would lead them to demand the departure of the Socialists from government, as well as a clear rectification of the adopted policies.
