Abstract

Geological exploration of the Iberian and Catalan Coastal ranges allowed recognition of two new lithostratigraphical units which have been informally used, for the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian deposits. These new formal units are called the Río Palomar Fm and the Almonacid de la Cuba Fm. Reorganization of the Toarcian-Aalenian (p. p.) system of lithostratigraphic units implies the change of the Casinos Mb, considered as a portion of the Chelva Fm, to the rank of formation and the Chelva Fm to the rank of group.
