The diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been highly controversial ever since its inclusion in diagnostic classification systems. Although the successive revisions of these classifications have brought about considerable improvement, some aspects remain open to discussion, such as the identification and clustering of nuclear symptoms of the disorder, the number of symptoms required for diagnosis, and so forth. Up to now, the diagnosis of PTSD has relied essentially on structured interviews, which turn out to be highly demanding both in time and effort and not very helpful in some services and settings. On the other hand, the available self-report measures have important limitations. Stemming from a review of the available instruments for the assessment of the PTSD, this paper presents a new instrument, the Scale for the Global Assessment of Posttraumatic Stress (SGAPTS), a self-report scale developed in Spanish that allows the integral assessment of PSTD psychopathology and its diagnosis, following the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th edition, American Psychiatric Association, 1994).
