Resumo

Twenty-five years ago, Spanish businessmen had to confront a major economic crisis, a firmly rooted anti-capitalist climate and the uncertainties of the Political Transition. They fought to have the market economy specifically acknowledged in the Constitution. They also organised themselves and formed the first-ever top-level Spanish Confederation of Business Organisations called the ‘C.E.O.E.’. This organisation later became an important voice in the determination of social agreement policies. Hence, Spanish businessmen fulfilled an important role during the early years of the transition to democracy in Spain. Ever since that period, they have supported or criticised the various political and economic situations that have existed in Spain.
