Résumé

The district of Chamberi arose in the north of Madrid around the middle of the 19th century as a popular residential alternative to a city with serious problems of population overcrowding. Aset of real estate promotions, made outside the boundaries of legality, gave rise to a poor small village that welcomed the immigration which the city was incapable of absorbing. The commencement of the enlargement of the city in 1860 attempted to give order to that population growth; in the newly created urban districtthe contradictions of the social evolution of a middle-half-19th-century city like Madrid were expressed, in which a remarkable population increase and urban development were combined with a scarce industrial development and a persistence of the socioeconomic structures of a preindustrial city.
