Abstract

A new lithostratigraphical framework consisting of seven formations is proposed for the Upper Cretaceous (Upper Coniacian-Upper Maastrichtian) to Palaeocene sedimentary rocks of the eastern Prebetic Zone (SE Spain). These rocks are mostly hemipelagic carbonates and, because their relative lithological homogeneity, they have been usually framed in large stratigraphic units, of indubitable value in broad regional geological works, but unpractical for sequence stratigraphic and biostratigraphic analyses as well as for detailed geologic mapping. The objective of the new proposal is thus to rationalise the nomenclature of this area, and to establish a workable, mappable lithostratigraphical subdivision. This subdivision includes five new formations —Naveta Fm (Upper Coniacian-Upper Santonian), Aspe Fm (lowermost Campanian-Lower Maastrichtian), Alberquilla Fm (Lower Danian-Upper Thanetian), Agost Fm (lowermost Danian-Upper Thanetian) and Pinoso Fm (uppermost Thanetian-middle Ilerdian)— which are formally defined in this paper, and extends the definition of other two previously defined units: Carche Fm (uppermost Santonian-Lower Maastrichtian) and Raspay Fm (Upper Maastrichtian).
