Abstract

In this paper we report the first discovery and sampling of Fe-Mn nodules in the Gulf of Cádiz. Nodules collected (more than 500 samples) have been found on continental crust near muddy-gas mounds in the Guadalquivir Diapiric Ridge. The nodules recovered show a wide range of sizes and masses and tabular morphology. They are mainly formed by Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides in layers surrounding the nucleus. Nodules show great Fe abundance (37,7%) versus Mn (5,9%) and trace metals and REEs shortage with respect to the medium contents in oceanic nodules. The Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides and sulphide contained into the nodules could be related to micro-organisms activity (biomineralization process) linked to the hydrocarbons seeps.
