Abstract

The indications of the AO/ASIF method in the mandibular fractures treatment in our ambit are discussed, by a retrospective analysis of the results obtained in the treatment of 68 patients with 102 mandibular fractures, at the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the Hospital Universitario "Doce de Octubre", during the first year of experience with this method. Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) alone was performed in 30 patients (44,1%) and 23 patients underwent internal fixation with 2 milimeters miniplates system. AO/ASIF method was employed in 15 patients (22,1%), in which the goal of treatment was a rigid fixation without postoperative IMF, due to poor dentition, non patient compliance, IMF contraindication, previous infection and/or long delay in surgical treatment. In this patients, overall complication rate was similar to others therapeutic methods. We conclude that this method has the advantage of the rigid fixation and immediate mobilization, especially indicated for selected patients.
