Abstract
Introduction. The utility rectus abdominis flap in reconstruction of great and tridimensional complex head and neck defects, offers a therapeutic alternative in those patients with a great pathology extension of the disease, or failure with other therapeutic methods. Material and method. We present a retrospective study in 16 free rectus abdominis flap performed during the period 1-1-1996 and 1-7-1999, in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre of Madrid. Results. The successfully global rate of microvascular transference was up to 93%, with a very low rate of donorsite and recipient-site complications. Nearly 50% of patients with stage IV are alive with locoregional control after 2 years of postoperative follow up. Conclusions. The great head and neck defects reconstruction with the rectus aabdominis free flap is a secure and trustworthy method, useful, in those patients with a long state clinical evolution.
