Abstract
In this article we analyse the trend in Spanish productivity compared with the rates recorded on the European Union and the United States, pointing out the factors explaining the different trend. In this way, we confirm a meagre increase in the efficiency of the Spanish economy as a result of the inadequate human and technological capital endowments. Likewise, it is a case of showing that the sectoral pattern based on low technological content activities and the increasing amount of immigrant labour are also causes of the slow advance in productivity. In the light of these results, we propose the design of economic policies that will increase technological capital and the use of ICTS, besides measures to promote the quality of formal and ongoing education.
