Resumen

This article aims to review the studies linking alterations to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex to antisocial behavior. The processes affected by lesions to this area, and their possible effects on different types of criminal behavior, are expounded. When analyzing the bibliography, decision-making was discovered to be one of the most important functions related to this area, and many authors link poor decision-making skills to drug dependency, as well as to many other non-violent types of antisocial behavior. The possibility of forensic consequences, by reducing sentences, was also explored, and it was discovered that Spanish courts tend to consider subjects displaying behavior alterations as a result of prefrontal brain damage to be less responsible for their actions.
