This paper analyses the relationship between unemployment spell and the training courses for economic disadvantaged unemployed workers elaborated by the National Employment Institute (INEM). Two groups of Spanish unemployed workers are compared between April 2000 and February 2001, one of them did training courses in the first quarter of 2000. Non-parametric techniques and duration methods are used to analyse this relationship. Taking into account potential sample problems, the findings suggest that medium and high level courses reduce unemployment spell more than basic level courses do. Women show better results than men, especially with medium level courses.
