Abstract

For Piaget imagery is closely linked to intellectual development, as operational thought is involved in the reproduction and anticipation of movement. If language plays an important role in mental operations, the reproduction and anticipation of kinetic image in deaf children should develop with significant delay. The aim of the present investigation was to study imagery development in relation to language in a group of 5 to 15 year old deaf children. Results support Piagetian theory as, on the static copying task, no differences were found between deaf and hearing children, thus confirming the scant influence of language. However, on the kinetic reproduction and anticipatory tasks deaf children showed a significant delay. Oral language, therefore, is seen to facilitate the development of these skills. Finally the paper underlines the importance of childrens environment on task performance which Piaget does not take into account
