Abstract

The direction of runoff and underground flow in the Campo de Montiel aquifer (Central Spain), its internal thresholds, the location of springs, the flowing of rivers into three different catchment basins (Guadiana, Guadalquivir and Júcar) as well as the origin of the Lagunas de Ruidera Parkland are the result of a ductile and brittle deformation. The spatial distribution of crustal flexures, folds, joints and ENE-WSW, NW-SE and NNE-SSW faults and fracture zones are due to a weak intraplate compressive stress field transmitted from the Betic border (< 9 Ma).
