Resumen

La adecuación metodológica de la encuesta para la detección del racismo y la xenofobia viene debatiéndose en estudios anteriores. En el presente quiere avanzarse en su medición a través de encuesta. Primero se realiza una aproximación teórica de los conceptos de racismo y xenofobia, por sus distintas modalidades y aspectos que hay que cubrir en dicha medición, a partir de las investigaciones teórico-empíricas existentes. En segundo lugar se abordan los errores principales que pueden concurrir al registrar dichos fenómenos mediante encuesta. Después se desciende al nivel de los indicadores. Mediante la articulación de técnicas analíticas multivariables (conglomerados y discriminante) en muestras de análisis y de validación, se evalúa la efectividad de indicadores tradicionales en las encuestas del CIS, que se comparan con «nuevos» anteriormente aplicados en la Encuesta Social Europea de 2002-2003. Estos últimos acaban mostrando mayor efectividad en la medición del rechazo a la inmigración, debido principalmente al formato de pregunta que adoptan en el cuestionario. No obstante, continúan detectándose errores de medición que llevan a propuestas de dimensiones, indicadores y formatos de preguntas que pueden ayudar en la compleja detección de la latencia del racismo y la xenofobia.
