Abstract

The paper reviews some of the findings of developmental research on ethnic prejudice during childhood and preadolescence carried out in Spain. From a sociocognitive-developmental approach, we examine some precursors of prejudice in childhood, such as, ethnic categorisation skills, self-identification skills, and early attitudes, together with late abilities that emerge during preadolescence, which are related with social discrimination awareness and its repercussions on victims. Some of these results are compared with those from research studies undertaken in countries with a multiethnic population. Studies carried out with Latin American children living in Spain are also described and discussed in terms of their social implications.
