Résumé

The Council of Military Orders was one of the oldest and more prestigious organs of the Spanish Universal Monarchy during all the Modern Age, but it has not been correctly studied until now. We intend to understand its origins with the work of José López de Agurleta, a Santiagos Order monk, who in 1723 wrote an opuscule, never printed until now, where he bases the historical antecedents (from the Infant-Master Don Enrique) and first years (1477-1523) of the institution, already under the royal orbit. This being a work written up with a very concrete purpose, we believe it can serve today as the starting point of future research on this Consejo.
