Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the possibilities and limitations of the Spanish industry facing its near future. To carry out this task, the first step is to review the main historical stages of the process on industrialization. The second step is to evaluate the current situation regarding the productive structure of the industry and the relative low weight of technologically intensive sectors. Particularly important is the analysis of the situation of technological innovation because it occupies a central position in order to evaluate the difficulties of the industry insofar as the innovative activity is the basis to understand productivity problems and competitiveness challenges
